Obituary

Anne Celeste Newcomer Dungan, age 80, of Harpers Ferry passed away on Wednesday, April 17, 2024 at her home.

Born September 4, 1943 in Harpers Ferry, WV, She was the daughter of the late John N. and June H. Newcomer. She attended and was very active in St. James the Greater Catholic Church in Charles Town. Anne was a 1961 graduate of Harpers Ferry High School, and then earned her degree in Early Childhood Development at Michigan State University in 1965, which led to her decades long career as an elementary school teacher.

In 1970, Anne bought and restored White Pillars in Harpers Ferry. She and her brother, John were the last two Brackett descendants to live on the campus of Storer College.

Anne had many interests in life including spending time with her family and many friends, her church life, traveling, reading, and history. She took great interest in and believed in participating in both local and national politics in addition to her active life in her faith.

Her great-grandfather, Nathan Cook Brackett, was Superintendent of Schools for the Freedmen's Bureau in the Shenandoah Valley and was the founder and long-time President of Storer College in Harpers Ferry for the higher education of the freed slaves. At the time of her death she was on the Board of the historic Harper Cemetery (President), Eastern Panhandle Preparatory Academy (EPPA), and the Jefferson County Republican Executive Committee (Former County Chair).

Anne is survived by her husband of 52 years, Gary Dungan, her two daughters, Sarah Katz and husband Jared and Anne "Betsy" Dungan, five grandchildren, Dylan, James, Blake, Bree, and Iona and two brothers, John C. and Thomas Newcomer.  In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a daughter, Jennifer Lynn.

A Mass of Christian Burial  will be held at 10:00 am on Wednesday, April 24, 2024 at St James Catholic Church, 49 Crosswinds Drive, Charles Town, WV with Father Timothy Grassi as the Celebrant and assisting will be Deacon David Galvin.

The family will receive friends at Eackles-Spencer & Norton Funeral Home, 256 Halltown Road, Harpers Ferry, WV on Tuesday from 6-8 pm with a Rosary and Vigil to be held  at 7:30 pm.
