Anne
Kubic
February 4, 1933 – February 6, 2022
Anne Bovee Kubic, 89 of Charles Town, WV passed away at home on February 6, 2022 with her family by her side.
She was predeceased by her husband Frank Kubic.
She was born to Frank and Ada Ruth McGowan on February 4, 1933 in New York City. Her father was a surgeon and her mother was a registered nurse.
She grew up in Manhattan with her two brothers Peter and Bill McGowan.
Anne graduated from the Lenox School. She attended Colby College with a major in English before transferring to Columbia Presbyterian Hospital School of Nursing (now Columbia University School of Nursing) graduating with a degree in nursing in 1956. Her school's latin motto is "Salus generis humani" which means "The health of humanity". This dictum would remain an enduring thread throughout Anne's life. Moved by the humanitarian crisis evolving in Haiti caused by Hurricane Hazel in 1954 and political unrest in 1956 Anne took a position in the Hopital Albert Schweitzer which opened its doors in 1956. She worked as a surgical nurse in the operating room. She met her future husband Frank Kubic on a ship while on vacation. They married in 1959 and moved to Kingston, NY. Together with their growing family they moved to Bowie, Maryland where they raised six children. After her husband's retirement from the US State Department they bought land and moved to Charles Town where together with their sons they built a home in the Kabletown area. For many years they raised Suffolk sheep and Great Pyrenees. After many years taken up by raising children Anne passed a demanding refresher course in nursing and went back to work at Jefferson Memorial Hospital in Ranson. She worked the night shift until fully retiring in 1997.
Anne was a wonderful mother and grandmother. She was brilliant, open-minded and had an open heart for all of her family. She is survived by her four sons and their wives, Tom and Pat Kubic, Christopher and Kelley Kubic, David and Rachel Kubic, Peter Kubic and former wife Lori Wesolek Kubic, of Charles Town, and her daughters Elizabeth Kubic and her husband Ian Stein of Washington DC, and Leslie Kubic of Danvers, Massachusetts; her beautiful grandchildren Stephanie Hough and husband Steven Hough, Christopher Michael Kubic, Rachele Stein, Tobias Stein, Sarah Kubic, Eleanor Roccio, Peter Ryan Kubic, Grace Kubic, Julianne Kubic, Jenna Kubic, Jack Kubic, Kellie Naughton; and great-grandchildren Lyndsey Hough, Bradley Hough, and a future great-granddaughter due in March; her beloved cousin Jan Fox of Texas, her dear nephew Jeffrey McGowan of North Carolina, and her beloved niece Kelley McGowan Kinnicutt of Rhode Island.
Anne was very involved in the Charles Town community. She was a volunteer with Hospice of the Panhandle and was a co-founder of the annual February "Cookie for the Caregiver" drive.
She was a devoted member of the St. James Parish and was involved in various ministries through which she derived great satisfaction and developed close and enduring friendships. She was a member of the Old Opera House theater guild. She loved to read and was active in a bookclub at almost all times during her life. She loved books, magazines, newspapers, and the cartoonist Roz Chast. She adored music, especially classical music, and the music of Ella Fitzgerald, Cole Porter, Irving Berlin, George Gershwin, and contemporary artists Eva Cassidy and Alison Krause. She did her bookkeeping and paid her bills to country music: "it eases the pain", she quipped.
She loved all species of animals, especially cats, dogs, sheep, and horses. Her bird feeders were always full. She was a devoted mother and grandmother, a steady and reliable confident to her children, extended family, and to her many friends who appreciated her presence of mind and heart, her deep friendship, a keen wit, and warmth toward all of humanity.
In lieu of flowers any financial gifts may be made to The Hospice of the Panhandle, The Jefferson County Animal Shelter, or to Partners in Health.
