December 1, 1931 – May 21, 2022
Arthur F. Stewart, Sr., 90, of Harpers Ferry, WV passed away peacefully with his son by his side on Saturday, May 21, 2022 at the VA Medical Center in Martinsburg, WV.
Born on December 1, 1931, he was the son of the late Robert and Addie Stewart.
To many, he was known as "Ockie", a nickname that was given to him many years ago by his daughter, Cathy.
He was of the Christian faith. He served in the US Navy aboard the Aircraft Carrier U.S.S. Midway CVB-41 in the Korean War, as Gunnery. He worked at the Halltown Paper Board for over 25 years and he retired from the Government after 25 years in Germantown, MD.
Mr. Stewart, along with his wife, were caretakers of the Harper Cemetery, located on Filmore Street, for over 30 years, where he had many friends. He resided in the house that belonged to Harper Cemetery for over 57 years. The last year of his life, he resided with his son, Gene and wife, Linda in Charles Town, who were his loving caretakers, where he loved having weekly visits from his sister, Louise, and other family members and friends.
He is survived by one daughter, Cathy Maynard; one son, Robert "Gene" and wife, Linda Stewart; one daughter-in-law, Diana Stewart; eight grandchildren, Julie Milbourne and Mike, Pam Norris, Kerri Lynch and Todd, Laura Whittington and Brian, Gary Lewis, Tracey Cenate and Mike, Stephanie Weant and Joey, Jennifer Smith and Jaron; 17 great-grandchildren; 8 great-great grandchildren, and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, Irene Stewart and his son, Arthur F. Stewart, Jr., two brothers, Charles and Bobby Stewart, son-in-law, Roy Maynard and his beloved canine companions, Padge and Lucy.
There will not be a service. Arthur chose to donate his body to science, The Human Gift Registry in Morgantown, WV.
Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of ones choice. He was loved by many and will be dearly missed.
