Obituary

Betty Marie Newman passed away peacefully on February 16, 2026, surrounded by the love of her family.

Born on October 19, 1941, to the late Leslie G. and Nellie Clark in Shepherdstown, WV, Betty lived a long, beautiful life marked by kindness, faith, resilience, and unwavering devotion to her family and community.

Betty was a proud graduate of Page Jackson High School, Class of 1960. Betty's early years were shaped by the friendships she made there, many of which lasted throughout her life. It was also during this time that she met the love of her life, Charles "Charlie" Lee Newman, with whom she shared over 57 wonderful years of marriage, filled with love, laughter, and partnership.

Betty was a beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and friend. She touched countless lives with her gentle spirit and warm heart. Her home was always filled with love, laughter, good food, and the comforting presence that only she could create. She had a natural gift for making others feel valued, supported, and truly at home.

Betty dedicated more than 40 years to the hospitality industry at Charles Town Races, a Penn Entertainment Property. She began her career as a waitress and through dedication and hard work, rising to the position of Maître d'. She carried herself with grace, professionalism, and genuine love for people, earning the respect of co-workers and patrons alike.

Her love of nature deepened during her part time work at Jones Nursery, where she discovered her passion for flowers and gardening. After Charlie's passing, Betty proudly continued Newman's Lawn Care, along with her Brother-In-law Richard Newman, operating it with strength, independence, and determination until her own passing. Her perseverance and work ethic were admired by all who knew her.

A devoted woman of faith, Betty was an active member of St. John's Baptist Church in Shepherdstown, WV, where she served faithfully as a Deaconess and Head of the Culinary Team. She played a central role in church fellowship meals, including organized breakfasts and dinners, fundraisers, and community events. Betty loved serving others, visiting nursing homes, preparing meals, offering encouragement, and providing transportation to those in need. She was a caregiver to many, and her heart for service touched everyone she encountered.

Betty also served her wider community with dedication. She served seven years on the Board of Directors for the African American Community Association of Jefferson County, where she was responsible for community relations. She worked for over 10 years with the Annual Jefferson County NAACP Banquet, overseeing logistics, setup, and menu selection. For more than 20 years, she was the Head Coordinator for activities at the American Legion Post, and she loved serving on the Annual Page Jackson Reunion Committee.

In 2018, she was presented the Humanitarian Award by the Jefferson County NAACP.

Betty enjoyed many of life's simple pleasures. She loved cooking, gardening, and going to the beach. She cherished her bowling leagues, enjoyed trips to Atlantic City, and rarely missed her favorite soap operas. Above all, she took great pride in supporting her daughters and grandchildren in all their events and activities.

Betty is survived by her four devoted daughters Donna Newman of Inwood, WV, Denise Carter (Keith) of Martinsburg, WV, Dena Whiten (Darryl) of Frederick, MD and Delana Newman of Martinsburg, WV.

Her cherished grandchildren Whitney Rollins (Andrew) of Frederick, MD, Te'rel Roman of Virginia Beach, VA, Peyton Carter (Al) of Ranson, WV and bonus grandson Colby Jackson of Frederick, MD. Her beloved great-grandchildren Malakai Roman, Teagan Roman, Eryss Conley, Harper Rollins, Gianna Conley, and bonus granddaughter Cali Marie Jackson.

Her loving siblings Veda Brown (the late Gary) of Martinsburg, WV and Richard Clark (Mary Ann) of Newport News, VA,

Brother-in-law Richard "Bunny" Newman of Charles Town, WV, sister-in-law, Rosa Clark, cousin, Janice Branson who was raised with her family, and goddaughter Chaka McDaniel of Tampa, FL. Additionally, she leaves behind a host of nieces, nephews, in-laws, cousins and many treasured friends.

Betty was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, Charles Lee Newman; her parents, Leslie G. and Nellie Clark; her brothers, John T. Clark and Clarence H. Clark; and her foster child, Wade Vernard McDonald.

Betty found joy in her faith, her family, and the simple beauty of everyday life. Her legacy is one of compassion, service, and unconditional love. She touched the lives of many and leaves behind a light that will continue to shine through her family and all who were blessed to know her.
