Obituary

Bill R. Dunn, a stalwart advocate for so many worthwhile causes, passed away after a brief battle with cancer on December 13, 2023, leaving behind a legacy of dedication and passion. He was born on March 8, 1948 in Long Island, NY.

For over three decades, Bill devoted his life to the cause of General Aviation, making indelible contributions to the industry and those whose paths he crossed. His illustrious career spanned 23 years as the Vice President of Airport Advocacy for the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association (AOPA). Even after retiring from his official role, Bill continued to provide his expertise to AOPA as a consultant, remaining a go-to authority until the very end.

Beyond the aviation world, Bill was a car enthusiast who found joy in the throaty rumble of his beloved Mustang. Despite his gruff exterior, those close to him knew of the gentle and compassionate heart that beat within. In their leisure hours, Bill and Dixie dedicated themselves to the welfare of unwanted dogs, demonstrating a kindness that endeared them to both two-legged and four-legged friends alike.

Bill is survived by his loving wife of 37 years, Dixie, and their three children: Jennifer (Steve) Hanson, Kimberly (Damion) Kogut, and Eric Brown (Melissa McGill). He is also survived by seven grandchildren: Skylar & Jake Hanson, Dylan, Andrew, Catherine & Blake Kogut and Hannah Brown.

A Celebration of Life in honor of Bill will be held from 1:30 to 3:00 pm on Saturday, January 13, 2024 at  AOPA , Aviation Community Center Hangar, 296 Bucheimer Road, Frederick, MD 21701. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Rescue Me WV in memory of Bill R. Dunn.
