Obituary

Deacon Robert M. Thomas, affectionately known as "Stuff," graced this world on October 11, 1934, and peacefully received his heavenly reward on November 25, 2023.

Born to proud parents Frank M. Thomas and Gertrude L. Payne Thomas, Robert, the youngest son, embodied a warm and easygoing nature that endeared him to all. He never knew a stranger, always offering a friendly greeting and sharing his trademark phrase, "Blessed by the Best and Praying for the Rest".

With over 28 years dedicated to General Motors and 25 years serving on the Board of Directors at the Eastern Panhandle Federal Credit Union, Robert's professional journey was marked by commitment and service. Transitioning into retirement, he wholeheartedly embraced his passion for racehorses. His days were filled with the joy of ownership, grooming, training, and accompanying these majestic animals on their travels. A true sports enthusiast, Robert's journey began on the football field during his high school years. Transitioning into adulthood, he discovered new passions, finding joy in the camaraderie of bowling and softball. Robert's passion for sports endured by fervently supporting the Ravens on the football field, cheering passionately for the Orioles in baseball, and avidly watching the thrilling world of horse racing.

Beyond his professional and sporting endeavors, Deacon Thomas was a cherished member of the all-male singing group, The Brothers of Harmony. This gospel ensemble traveled extensively, sharing the message of faith through song. As The Brothers of Harmony evolved into a Masonic Lodge, Deacon Thomas was installed as one of its early officers. Dedicated to service, he spent several years at Mt. Olivet Baptist Church before being appointed head Deacon by his dear friend, the late Reverend Aaron Moye, Jr. Deacon Thomas found joy in fellowshipping with and faithfully serving the members of Mt. Olivet Baptist Church, as well as supporting local churches in the community.

In every aspect of his life, Robert was guided by strong values, displaying unwavering commitment, kindness, and a deep sense of community. His legacy is one of genuine connections, where the essence of who he was lies in the simplicity of his warmth, the sincerity of his words, and the selflessness of his actions.

Deacon Robert M. Thomas was preceded in death by his parents, his beloved wife Frances Gray Thomas, and two daughters, Roxann McDonald and Marsha F. Thomas. He is also reunited in eternal peace with his siblings: Grace, Mamie, Parthenia, Ollie, Onetta, Gladys, Rosetta, Elsie, Clifford, James, William, Ralph, Benjamin, and Allen, as well as several aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Celebrating his remarkable life are his daughter, Joann McDonald, and a great-great niece and caregiver, Tianna Venable, who shared a special bond with him. Additionally, four generations of nieces, nephews, and cousins join together to remember and honor the legacy of Deacon Robert M. Thomas.
