Obituary

Our loving husband, father and Paw Paw, Elwood "Woody" Hibberd, formerly of Loudoun County, went peacefully on to his Heavenly home on Saturday, June 12, 2021.  He was 82.

Born in Alexandria, Virginia to Albert and Barbara Hibberd he had an "All American Boy" childhood in the 50's with his paper route, his beloved dogs, church on Sundays, playing sports and riding his bike all over the streets of Alexandria with his childhood friends.

He graduated from GW High School in Alexandria and left for his short-lived college baseball career due to "partying his way out" at Chowan College.  He tried several jobs until he found his passion in law enforcement.  On August 15, 1960, he was sworn into Arlington County Police Department where he made lifelong friends and rose to the rank of Lieutenant before retiring after 31 years.  While serving his community, he was called to serve his country and gladly did so as an MP in the United States Army.  He was stationed in California and Germany and loved his time in the military.  He shared many a story about his travels and adventures and all the awesome food in between!

When he returned from being stationed overseas he was introduced by his mother to the woman who would walk beside him for the rest of his life, his Southern Belle, Judy Lawson.  After a brief 6 month engagement, they wed and never looked back.  In 1975 they moved their family from Arlington to Sterling, VA where they would raise us and live for the next 30 years.  While dad worked full time and raised his family, he went back to school and graduated from American University with his Bachelor's degree.  He was very active in church from the Board of Trustees to usher and went on mission trips as well.

His love for playing sports carried over into adulthood where he played softball for the ACPD and in the church league.  While he enjoyed these, he truly loved the game of golf and never missed the opportunity to play whether it was with other LEO's, his family, church friends or strangers.

He loved his children and grandchildren and could always be counted on to show up at a ball field, golf course, dance recital or anywhere else we were to show his love and support.  He taught us so many valuable lessons.  From church pews, the front porch, the picnic table, around the grill, family dinners, vacations, road trips and everywhere in between we never got tired of soaking up his knowledge and wisdom and hearing his infectious laugh!

He never met a stranger and was quick with a hug, a wink, a kind word or a smile.  He walked in and made the room a better place.  At 6'4 you could spot him anywhere and he usually would be surrounded by people and regaling them with some story or something crazy he'd seen in his lifetime.  He might even get that look and start talking out of the side of his mouth....if you know, you know.  Rest assured you would have a great conversation, hear a story, laugh like crazy and definitely come away with a smile!

His loving wife of over 55 years, Judy Lawson Hibberd, his children Tracy (David Paugh) and David (Julie Hibberd), his grandchildren, Evan, Trevor, Jordan and Kyle and his friends and family will mourn him here on Earth and miss him terribly but we will find joy in the love and memories and legacy he has left behind.  We rejoice in knowing we will see him once again in God's glorious kingdom!

Services will be held for Woody, along with his wife Judy, who has since passed away, on Wednesday July 21, 2021 at Asbury United Methodist Church, 110 W. North Street, Charles Town, WV at 1:00 pm. The family will receive friends at the church from 11:00 am until 1:00 pm. Interment will be in Green Hill Cemetery in Berryville, VA
