Ethel Dean Brown Porter, 104 years old, passed away on March 14, 2023 while in the care of Commonwealth Senior Living - Berryville and Blue Ridge Hospice of Winchester, VA.
She was born in 1919 in Charleston, WV, to the late Merle Brown and Manila Carey Brown (Davis). She was married to the late Charles Porter, Sr.
Ethel's education was provided by the public schools in Kanawha County, WV. She became a LPN and retired in 1988 from the Charleston Area Medical Center. She loved her profession and talked constantly about her work in the dialysis unit. In earlier years, she operated a licensed, home-based used clothing business.
Ethel was of the Baptist faith. She was a former member of the Charleston Woman's Improvement League, a volunteer at the Charleston Covenant House and a community activist.
She is survived by a daughter, Shirley Tolbert of Jefferson County, a granddaughter, Melissa Porter Myers (James), grandsons, James (Constance), Michael (Erika), Steven (Kim) Tolbert, great grandsons, Miles, Aiden, and Logan Tolbert and Zachary Myers, granddaughter-in-law, Rachel Tolbert and nephews, nieces, cousins and friends.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her sons, Leroy and Charles Porter,, Jr., and daughter, Joan Porter-Green, siblings, Oscar, Malvin, and Nellie Brown, son-in-law, James Alvin Tolbert and a grandson, Gregory Tolbert.
A private graveside service will be held at Milton Valley Cemetery in Berryville, Virginia, with Archbishop Ronald Paige of the Spirit of Praise Ministries officiating.
