Obituary

After 94 years filled with love, family, and cherished memories, Evelyn Joyce Bowman passed away peacefully on August 24, 2026, surrounded by those who loved her most.

Born on November 3, 1931, Evelyn was known for her quick wit, natural warmth, and uncanny ability to strike up a conversation with anyone, anywhere. She possessed a rare gift for making people feel instantly at home, always leaving an extra place set at her table for whoever happened to walk through the door.

Family was the true anchor of Evelyn’s world. She delighted in gathering loved ones together, keeping holiday traditions alive, and cooking comforting meals rooted in her Pennsylvania Dutch heritage. As a young wife and mother, she helped run the family farm—that became Hidden Creek Apiary—and spent many years actively supporting local youth through 4-H and community programs.

A woman of remarkable strength, Evelyn survived breast cancer in the 1970s and channeled her experience into decades of service with the Loudoun County Reach to Recovery Chapter, offering hope and steady encouragement to fellow survivors. Her deep, enduring faith was rooted at New Jerusalem Lutheran Church in Lovettsville, Virginia, where she remained a lifelong member.

Evelyn shared 67 wonderful years of marriage with her devoted husband, Lester. Together, they explored all 50 states and made frequent trips to Canada and Mexico. Yet some of her favorite moments were the quietest ones at home: taking evening golf cart rides around the farm after supper, watching the local birds, and gathering bouquets of native wildflowers from the meadow they planted together.

Though her life was long and rich, it was also marked by profound loss. Evelyn carried the passings of her beloved husband, Lester Henry Bowman; her daughter, Karyn Kay Shank; and her eldest son, Lester Henry Bowman Jr., with quiet grace and incredible resilience.

She is survived by her son, Douglas Wayne Bowman, and his wife, Kimberly; her grandchildren;  Heather Gottke, husband Sean, Jesse Dixon, wife Jen, Lester Henry, III, Kyle Bales, wife Chelsea, Catie Pusey, husband Logan, Marissa Bowman, Jessica Carroll and Chyanne Gottke, her great grandchildren Jacob Dixon, wife Holly, Mathew Dixon, Elliot Pusey, Camden Bowman and Beau Pusey, her daughter-in-law, Alice James and many other family members and loved ones whose lives she touched.

Over the past year, Evelyn’s family rallied together to care for her at home. Through shared hands and loving hearts, they ensured she was surrounded by the same dignity, comfort, and unconditional devotion she had poured into them for generations. She left this world just as she had lived in it—held tightly in the warmth of her family's love.

Evelyn leaves behind a legacy of steadfast faith, heartfelt wisdom, and a lifetime of shared laughter. Though she will be deeply missed, her spirit lives on through the family she so selflessly nurtured.

A graveside service will be held on Saturday, August 29, 2026, at 11:00 A.M., at the Hillsboro Cemetery, 37125 Charles Town Pike, Hillsboro, VA 20132, with Pastor Josh Wullenweber officiating.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the New Jerusalem Lutheran Church, 12942 Lutheran Church Road, Lovettsville, VA 20180.
