George Gilbert
Bratton
March 25, 1941 – November 12, 2024
George Gilbert Bratton, Jr, was the son of the late George Gilbert Bratton, Sr, and Ruth (Stacey) Bratton. He was born in Bluefield, Va. on March 25, 1941. He had a solid, Christian upbringing and was the apple of his mother's eye. He was a loving younger brother cherished by his older sisters.
Gilbert graduated from Tazewell County High School in 1959. Upon graduation he attended Bluefield State University where he majored in engineering. He was drafted into the United States Army and continued to learn and grow through travel. After serving his country diligently, Gilbert worked at the Harpers Ferry Job Corps in Harpers Ferry, WV. He enjoyed teaching mathematics and counseling the youth. While coaching football, his influence as a teacher and mentor touched many lives. He retired from the Harpers Ferry National Historical Park as a Park Ranger. Gilbert was a great outdoorsman and enjoyed fishing, hunting, and tennis. He also enjoyed amateur photography and amassed a large cadre of photos. Gilbert was a member of the local Masons and the American Legion.
On August 8, 1976, Gilbert was joined in holy matrimony with Margaret F. Miles, a former teacher at Jefferson High School. Through the years they maintained a loving friendship and shared many precious memories together with family and friends. Dear to his heart were his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchild. He was affectionately known as Mr. "G." and loved spending time with his buddies. To know him was to love him. He developed a love for football and was a diehard Redskins (Commanders) fan. Gilbert regularly attended Sunday church services where his love for the Lord was renewed.
Ecclesiastes 3:1 "There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens..."
George Gilbert Bratton, Jr, transitioned peacefully to eternal rest on Tuesday, November 12, 2024, surrounded by family and close friends. Besides his beloved parents, Gilbert was preceded in death by his three older sisters, Susie and Jackie L. Bratton, and Sylvia D. Preston.
