Gladys
Rockenbaugh
July 30, 1927 – May 11, 2024
Gladys M. (Hundley) Rockenbaugh was born in Clintonville, West Virginia on July 30, 1927. Her parents were Olive Ethel (Fleshman) Hundley, a homemaker, and her father, William Clyde Hundley, who had many professions, among them logger, carpenter…..and farmer.
She was the youngest of 9 children, all of whom predeceased her: 4 sisters, Bess Hundley Hanna, Dorothy Hundley Burns, Helena Hundley Bryant and Pansy Hundley Henson; and 4 brothers, Richard, Bernard, William and Max Hundley. She is survived by 3 children, a daughter, Shirley Rockenbaugh and her husband, Ed Hanson of Phoenix Arizona, a daughter, Stephanie Jeanne Rockenbaugh of Harpers Ferry West Va., and a son, Fred Rockenbaugh and his wife Jody, of Hagerstown, Md.
She is also survived by 5 grandchildren, 4 great-grandchildren, 2 great-great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Gladys attended Spotts Ridge Elementary School and Smoot High School, where she was President of her Junior High School class, and Vice President of her High School class. She graduated with honors.
Gladys was the only one of her siblings who left West Virginia to seek a career in Washington DC to work for J. Edgar Hoover in the FBI. Years later she received an appreciation award for her "Rosie the Riveter" years of service. Gladys worked for C&P Telephone Company, AT&T and retired as a Manager in the Training & Development department for Verizon, Inc. She was an active member of numerous civic and neighborhood organizations, including President of the Women of All Saints Church of Chevy Chase, MD, participated in the Harpers Ferry Camp Hill Methodist Church School and Choir, a Cub Scout den mother, President of The D.C. chapter of the AT&T Pioneers, President of The C&P Singers and a member of The Woman's Club of Harpers Ferry (since 1949).
Gladys lived in Washington DC when she met her husband, G. Williams Rockenbaugh, on a blind date.
When he passed away 12 years later, she and her three small children, ages 7, 9 and 11, moved to Friendship Heights in Washington DC where she lived in the same house for the next 47 years. She was well traveled seeing many exotic parts of the world. In retirement she continued to travel, was an avid reader, gardener, painter, writer, block captain and student of adult education courses. She moved to Venice Florida in 2005, and then to Harpers Ferry West Virginia in 2014.
Gladys was admired by her friends for her outgoing personality and her unbridled generosity. She was an advocate for women's rights and for the care and concern of those less fortunate. She will be remembered for her love of flowers, her gardens, her liberal political interests and her love of the Christmas holiday season.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that those wishing to make an expression in her honor, please consider a donation to Progressive Animal Welfare Shelter (PAWS of Harpers Ferry), to Saint John's Episcopal Church, or to their favorite charity.
