Obituary

Howard Lee Shewbridge, Jr. rose to God's glory on October 1, 2021, after a brief stay at Winchester Medical Center. He passed on as he lived, surrounded by his loving family. Howard was 89 years young. He was born February 15, 1932, to Howard Lee Shewbridge, Sr. and Marie Anna (Kain) Shewbridge.

Howard graduated from Harpers Ferry High School, then served in the United States Air Force. Howard was the epitome of the family man. The joy of his life was the family that he created with his wife of 63 years, Virginia "Ginny" Jenkins Shewbridge whom he wed on June 14, 1958. Howard retired from FEMA as a computer operator after working for 38 years, just in time to start making many special memories with his grandchildren.

He was a member of St. Peters and St. James Catholic churches. He was extremely honored to have served his country and was a proud member of the Harpers Ferry/Bolivar Veterans Association. He loved wearing his Air Force Veteran hat and green Veteran jacket and was thrilled when people recognized these and thanked him for his service. Howard was also a member of the Harpers Ferry Alumni Association. One of his favorite things to do was attend the Veteran's talent show at his alma mater, now Harpers Ferry Middle School, where his grandsons attended and where his daughter and oldest grandson now teach. He also loved the Harpers Ferry Veteran's parade and touring around afterwards to enjoy all the treats offered to our local veterans.

Howard loved watching any Jefferson High School sport and was a frequent fan for many years. He was an outdoorsman who passionately enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping and gardening. His favorite time of the year was Thanksgiving when he took his weeklong deer hunting trip with his son, Skip. He loved watching the Redskins and the Mountaineers even when "they didn't want to win". He was always tinkering with something and could fix anything and did, even the $1 Solar lights from "The Dollar Tree". Howard was also the Christmas Tree decorator extraordinaire.

Howard is survived by his loving wife, Ginny, his son and best friend Howard Lee "Skip" Shewbridge III, and his daughter Mary "Michelle" LaFollette and her husband Rick. He was "Dadaw" to his grandsons Matthew Richard LaFollette and Mason Howard LaFollette. He is also survived by his sister, Virginia Smith and many nieces and nephews. He especially loved and appreciated his niece "Debbie-doo" and her son, his "little buddy", Colton Clarke. He looked forward to seeing "his" Pammy and enjoyed all her special treats. He always loved seeing his first niece Teresa whom he enjoyed serenading with "A White Sport Coat and Pink Carnations".

Howard was preceded in death by his infant son born in October 1959, his brother, Dr. Anthol W. Shewbridge and his younger brother Alfred James who passed on prior to his first birthday.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 2:00 pm on Thursday, October 7, 2021, at St. James Catholic Church, 49 Crosswinds Drive, Charles Town, WV with Father Timothy Grassi as the Celebrant. The Rosary will be held at 1:30 pm. Visitation will also be at St. James at 1:00 pm. Interment will follow in Edge Hill Cemetery.

Donations may be made in his honor to the following:  Harpers Ferry/Bolivar Veterans Association, Harpers Ferry Alumni Association, and St. James Church (for the preservation of St. Peters Church).
