James E. Hammond Jr. "Jimmy", 72
Beloved son, brother, veteran, husband, father, grandfather and friend passed away peacefully in his family's arms at home on July 14, 2023.
He was born January 9, 1951 in Charles Town, WV, the son of Anne Hammond Larue and the late James E. Hammond Sr.
Jimmy graduated from Charles Town High School in 1969 and then was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1971. He served his country in the Vietnam War and was a Purple Heart recipient.
Once returning home. from the army, Jimmy dabbled in a few different things before landing in his life -long passion of thoroughbred horse racing; he worked at various tracks and in different positions within the field for over 45 years.
In addition to his father, Jimmy is preceded in death by his stepfather Warren Larue, his brother -in -law Aaron Hill, and his cousins Robert Shepherd and Wayne Newcomb.
He is survived by his mother Anne Hammond LaRue, sister Carol Hill, former wife Derby Hammond, daughter Christina Williams, son in law Dulaney Williams grandson Baylor Williams, as well as cousins Powell Juliano, Tim Shepherd (Sandy), Jane Rutherford (Johnny), Ricky Lucas (Mary), Beverly Hill, Charlie Lucas (Linda), Doug Newcomb (June), and Walter Newcomb (Sandy); he is also survived by his step siblings Jimmy LaRue (Jeanne) and Carol David (Skip)
Jimmy's service will be held at Eackles-Spencer & Norton Funeral Home 256 Halltown Road Harpers Ferry, WV 25425 On Saturday July 22 at 2pm. Family will receive friends one hour prior to service.
In lieu of flowers, those who wish to remember Jimmy in a special way may make donations in his memory to: Cancer Comfort Fund 2000 Foundation Way, Suite 2600, Martinsburg WV 25401.
