James Fulton McGlothlin, Jr., of Harpers Ferry, died unexpectedly at home on October 28, 2017.
He was born June 8, 1939 in Kingsport, Tennessee, the oldest child of James McGlothlin and Eloise Mattie (nee Robbins). He was a 1962 graduate of the University of Maryland.
Jim served from 1962 to 1966 in the US Navy, flying as radar intercept officer for one and a half years in Vietnam. He was awarded the Navy Commendation Medal with combat "V", and left the Navy with the rank of lieutenant.
From 1966 to 1993, Jim coordinated the drivers education program for the Escondido Union High School District (CA), where he also taught math and social studies. In 1994, he was vice principal until retiring in 2002.
He established another career, as rental property owner, first of one fixer-upper, then through sweat equity, of a 26-unit apartment building. He was self-taught in construction and renovation, known for his exacting standards. He was also a licensed realtor in Maryland and West Virginia.
Jim loved to travel with his family, and visited every state in the U.S., except Hawaii. With his wife, Nancy, he led charter groups throughout Europe during the 1990s. He was an avid and expert shopper, from antiques to tools.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Nancy; son, James (Debra); daughter, Janelle (Charly); sisters, Geanie Henley (John) and Jan Washko (John); step-daughters, Lori Long (Steve) and Linda Williams (Robert); seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
His brother, Robert, predeceased him.
A memorial to celebrate the life of Jim McGlothlin will be held at 11:00 am on Thursday, November 2, 2017 at Fellowship Bible Church, 160 Daniel Road, Shenandoah Junction, WV.
