Joan Lucille Hess, 93, of Charles Town, WV passed away Sunday, June 23, 2024 at her residence.

Born August 26, 1930 in Hagerstown, MD, she was the daughter of the late Clarence Barber and Charlotte Kennedy Barber.

She was a member of Grace United Methodist Church in Hagerstown, MD.

Joan was a graduate of North Hagerstown High School, Class of 1949. She was a member of the Women of the Moose Lodge #1028 in Charle Town. She was a talented beautician and loved cooking and sewing. She was a strong family matriarch.

She is survived by two daughters, Angela Fraley and husband, Curtis of Charles Town and Penny Gibson of Charles Town, one son, Jimmy Burkett of Martinsburg, one sister, Delores White, one brother, Donnie Barber, six grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Merle Hess, two sons, Monty Dean and Gregory Burkett and son-in-law, Ronald Chapman.

Services will be held at 11:00 am on Wednesday, July 3, 2024 at Eackles-Spencer & Norton Funeral Home, 256 Halltown Road, Harpers Ferry, WV with Dr. Henry Christie officiating.
