Obituary

John J. McManus of Charles Town, WV died on October 20, 2023.  He was born on September 1, 1961 in West Palm Beach, Florida and grew up nearby in Riviera Beach.  John was the sixth of nine children born to John B. and Virginia I. McManus.  After attending St. Francis Catholic Elementary School and Cardinal Newman High School, he studied at Palm Beach Junior College then earned a Bachelor's Degree in Latin American Studies from Florida Atlantic University.

As a child, John showed extraordinary artistic talent. In 1990 he achieved a Bachelor's Degree in Art and Design from Towson State University in Maryland.  Thereafter, he was a self-employed artist and educator.  His talents ranged from watercolor and pastel, to ink and oil and even wood carving.  John was the featured artist at exhibitions in galleries in Washington, D.C., Virginia and Maryland and his vibrant use of color was his hallmark.

John was a member of the Claymont Society, based in Charles Town, WV. The Society is a community centered around spirituality and commitment to the greater good of God's creation.  He lived on the Claymont Campus for many years, working at the Retreat Center and teaching, while producing stunning works of art.  John was also a supporter of the Lakota Sun Dance.  He was a Pipe Carrier as well as an All Nations Water Pourer and spent many hours carving intricate wooden talismans.

John was a sensitive man with a sweet personality, but strong principles.  He was quick-witted and had a unique sense of humor with a devilish grin. He loved animals and always had a treasured feline friend. John was a voracious reader and took immense pleasure in classical music, particularly Chopin and Bach.

He is survived by his brothers and sisters, their families and a multitude of friends.  John was laid to rest at Claymont, a place that he cherished.

Rest in peace, Johnny.
