Obituary

Keenan Ray Dunn went to be with his Heavenly Father on July 11, 2026 at the age of 84. A lifelong resident of Jefferson County, he was born March 26, 1942 in Middleway to Gladys Virginia (Liskey) and Stanley William Dunn, Sr.

A 1960 graduate of Charles Town High School, Keenan served as the president of the Future Farmers of American (FFA) and a member of the school’s Track Team. Following graduation, he completed two years of higher education, first at Potomac State College then at Shepherd College. He majored in chemistry/biology.

Then at age 21, Keenan left college to pursue his dream of farm ownership. First, he took full-time employment as an Inspector for the West Virginia State Road Commission assigned to the construction of Interstate 81. Thereafter, he qualified for a Farmers Home Administration Loan to purchase his peace of Paradise: 100 acres of rich Jefferson County soil. It was a blank slate on which he would establish Acorn Knoll Farm. He forged the first road, dug the first well, built the first buildings and erected the first fences. For almost 60 years, Keenan enjoyed the fruits of his labor.

Keenan’s first major Farm livestock enterprise was a farrow- to- finish swine operation. His successful integration and management of outdoor breeding/ gestation programs with farrowing/ nursery/finishing facilities attracted state and national recognition. In 1988 he was appointed by the United States Department of Agriculture as the first West Virginia representative to the National Pork Producers Council State Advisory Board. Concurrently, he was named Jefferson County Conservation Farmer of the Year for his soil and water management practices. Keenan served as an officer in the Jefferson County Farm Bureau and on the Board of Supervisors for the Eastern Panhandle Conservation District.

His last major and most personally gratifying livestock endeavor was a cow/calf herd. Keenan valued and prized his herd and enjoyed caretaking, protecting and providing for his cattle. He sold his herd in 2021 He also loved horses, especially foals. He bred his mare Liza, and her mares, producing 13 foals. The last of these farm-raised horses, 29-year-old Dakota Wind, will miss Keenan’s daily treats of carrots and brown sugar.

Although he preferred the comforts of his Farm, he treasured three trips with Linda: First, a road trip to the Dakotas through the rich farmlands of the Mid-West: second, a road trip to Oklahoma to experience the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum; and third an international excursion to Oxford England and Dublin Ireland. In Ireland he reunited with friends who shared the Irish/International Horse Show and tours of real- life Irish farms.

Keenan is survived by his devoted wife of fifty years, Linda Smith Dunn; three sisters: Dixie Ruby (Robert), Rebecca Alvarez (Manuell) and Mariland Lee (Charlie); two brothers: Maxwell Dunn (Carolyn) and Terry Dunn (Frances); three sisters-in-law: Katherine “Kitty” Blue Dunn; JoAnn Smith Rudy (Roger); and Patricia Swails Smith; along with a number of nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a brother, Stanley William Dunn, Jr.; a brother-in-law, James E. Smith; and a niece, Mia Jo Rudy.

Graveside services will be held Thursday, July 16, 2026 at 11:00 am at Zion Lutheran Church Cemetery in Baker, WV with Reverend Gary Koontz officiating.

The family will receive friends at Eackles-Spencer & Norton Funeral Home, 256 Halltown Road, Harpers Ferry, WV on Wednesday, July 15, 2026 from 4-6 pm.
