Obituary

Linda McCarthy Newman was born April 27, 1963 in Chester, Pennsylvania to the late George and Jennie McCarthy.  She was the older sister to Darryl (affectionately named Danny by Linda) McCarthy.

Linda graduated from Chester High School in 1981.  She earned her bachelor's degree at the University of Pittsburgh and her Master's degree in speech pathology at West Chester University.

Linda accepted Jesus Christ as her personal Saviour at a young age.  As a youth, she attended Grace Methodist Church in Chester, Pennsylvania.  Linda loved to use her voice to praise the Lord.  Upon relocating to Frederick, Maryland, she was a member of Jackson United Methodist Church, where she was a member of the Voices of Unity choir.  When she moved to West Virginia, she became a member of Asbury United Methodist Church in Shepherdstown, West Virginia, where she was involved in various ministries such as the choir and the puppet ministry.

In 1989, while in graduate school, Linda followed her dream and became a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated.  Her most memorable accomplishments in the sisterhood were becoming a Silver Star (25 year member) in 2015 and attaining her Life Membership in 2020.  Linda was a true servant leader.  Linda was actively involved in many committees on the Local and Regional levels.  Linda served the Chi Theta Omega chapter in Frederick, Maryland tirelessly for over 18 years.  She was the chapter's Standards Chairman at the time of her passing.  She served as the Membership Chairman, chapter's Secretary, Vice President and was the chapter's 4th President.  Linda previously served on the North Atlantic Regional Standards Committee under the leadership of the 33rd North Atlantic Regional Director Meredith L. Henderson.  Linda was currently serving on the North Atlantic Regional Program Committee under the leadership of the 34th Regional Director Mary Bently Lamar.  Linda was a graduate of the inaugural Ethel Hedgeman Lyle Leadership Academy, where she was named the Servant Leader of her class.  Linda loved and honored her sorority, completing endless hours of community service.

Linda had a passion for helping others, and found her true calling as a Speech and Language Pathologist.  Linda began her career in Ohio, and then moved to Frederick where she worked in Skilled Nursing Facilities before landing a job at Frederick Memorial Healthcare System in 1997.  Her work included helping patients learn to speak/communicate, and/or improve their ability to eat safely, and receive nourishment following medical emergencies.  Linda joined the Frederick County Public School System in 2005.  She always enjoyed working with young people, and she flourished working with students with challenging communication due to differing abilities.  She worked for the past ten years at Crestwood Middle School.  Linda was loved by her co-workers, and she was seen as a symbol of inspiration, courage and grace.  She loved all of the students in the school, and they truly loved "Mrs. Newman" as well.  When time and opportunities permitted, she spoke at seminars as a subject matter expert throughout her career.

Linda married the love of her life, Allen Newman, on August 2, 2003. She gained a daughter, Aaliyah Newman, and grandson Isaiah.

If you knew Linda, you knew she loved life to the fullest, regardless of how she physically felt, never complaining and always smiling or cracking a joke.  Her faith in the Lord never let her give up on living! She was a compassionate soul that will be missed by many.  2 Corinthians 4:16-18 (New King James Version) states, "Therefore we do not lose heart.  Even though our outward man is perishing, yet the inward man is being renewed day by day.  For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, is working for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory, while we do not look at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen.  For the things which are seen are temporary, but the things which are not seen are eternal."

Linda gained her wings on May 18, 2021.  She leaves behind to cherish her memory: her beloved husband, Allen Newman, stepdaughter Aaliyah, grandson Isaiah, her mother, Jennie McCarthy, her brother and sister in law Darryl and Diane McCarthy, nieces Brittany and Danielle McCarthy, great niece Kyla Bailey, her best friend of over 50 years, Paula Simmons, sorority sisters, church members, coworkers and friends.

Linda fought like a champion and now is victoriously resting with our Lord.
