Lydia Lane Shewbridge, 88, a resident of Salisbury since 1988, died peacefully on Tuesday, August 10, 2010. She was the daughter of the late Gilmour M. and Lena Frank Will, and was born August 31, 1921 in Harrisonburg, Virginia.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles V. Shewbridge, who died in 1983. She is survived by their daughter, Diane Lane and her husband, Wayne V. Shaff, of Salisbury. Lydia is the last surviving member of her immediate family, being preceded in death by her parents, her older brother, Gilmour M. Will, Jr., who was KIA in World War II, and her younger brother, Raymond who died in 1993. She is survived by a number of cousins in the Rockingham and Shenandoah counties of Virginia.
Lydia Lane was a 1939 graduate of Harrisonburg High School, and attended the First Methodist Church in the city. In late 1939 the family moved to Brunswick, Maryland, after which she graduated from Strayer's Business College and attended the Stenographic Institute, both in Washington, D.C. During World War II she was employed as a court reporter/secretary for the US State Department in the Legal Department of the Secretary of State, Cordell Hull.
She married and made her home in Brunswick, Maryland. In the early 1950's she began work as secretary to the principal at Brunswick High School. Her tenure was long, 28 years, and she is lovingly remembered by many students. She transferred to the central office of the Frederick County Board of Education, retiring in 1982.
In the summer of 1984, she began work of Frederick Community College and continued until she moved to Salisbury.
In Brunswick, Lydia Lane was a member of the former, First United Methodist Church, the American Legion Auxiliary, A 50 year member of Brunswick Chapter #97 Order of the Eastern Star, (now functioning in Frederick), and an honorary member of the Brunswick High School Alumni Association. At the Ali Ghan Shrine Temple in Cumberland, Maryland she became a member of the Daughter of the Nile. She belonged to the Business and Professional Women's Association in Frederick.
In August of 1988 she moved to Salisbury, Maryland to be near her daughter and son-in-law. Lane, has enjoyed membership in the Bethesda United Methodist Church, where she chaired Circle Elizabeth for six years. She was a former board member of the Friends of Poplar Hill Mansion Historical Society and a member of Wicomico County Republican Women's Club.
Lydia Lane will be remembered by many in the Salisbury area and by dear friends, Dr. and Mrs. Fred Brown of Sebring, Florida.
A funeral service will be held on Saturday, August 14, 2010 at 1:00 pm at Holloway Funeral Home where friends may call one hour prior to the service. Rev. Dale Vroman will officiate. There also will be a memorial service held on Tuesday, August 17, 2010 at 7:00 pm at Eackles-Spencer & Norton Funeral Home in Harpers Ferry, West Virginia.
