Mary Teresa
Smith
August 28, 1926 – September 24, 2021
Mary Teresa (Terry) Smith, 95, of Shepherdstown, passed away Friday, September 24, 2021, at her residence.
Born August 28, 1926, in New Haven, Connecticut, she was the daughter of the late Clayton Henry Clark and Mary Agnes Morrissey Clark. She was raised in East Hampton, Connecticut.
Terry worked as a service representative for the C & P Telephone Company in Washington, D.C. in the decade following World War II, where she met her late husband Hugh, a Navy pilot. They married in 1954 and raised a large family in Laurel, Maryland, in a neighborhood full of families who would become lifelong friends. Hugh and Terry later followed some of those friends to Shepherdstown, where they spent the remainder of their days living along the Potomac in a close-knit community. A working mother who balanced the demands of her family and her job, Terry was known for her strong faith, commitment to family, and sense of fun.
She is survived by her two daughters, Mary Anne Harding, of Austin, Texas, and Catherine Jeanne Pennington and husband, Greg, of Herndon, Virginia; three sons, John Clayton Smith and wife, Lisa, of Delray Beach, Florida, Robert Clyde Smith, of Shepherdstown, and Thomas Gerard Smith and wife, Katherine, of Atlanta, Georgia; 11 grandchildren, Chris Harding, Jeremy Harding, Emily Pennington, Julia Pennington, Claire Pennington, Jack Smith, Kaitlin Smith, Jennifer Smith, Caroline Smith, Elizabeth Smith and Clayton Smith; and one great-granddaughter, Alice Harding.
She was preceded in death by her husband Hugh Melvin Smith; one daughter, Nancy Eileen Smith; and three brothers, Neri Clark, Xavier Clark, and William Clark.
A funeral liturgy will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday Oct. 1, 2021 at St. Agnes Catholic Church in Shepherdstown, with the Rev. Father Mathew Rowgh as the celebrant.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday Sep. 30 at Eackles-Spencer & Norton Funeral Home, 256 Halltown Road, Harpers Ferry.
Interment will be in Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.
