Mary Eileen O'Toole Smoot passed away peacefully on October 18th, 2025, in her home surrounded by family, under the care of Hospice of the Panhandle.
Mary was born in Seattle, Washington on February 13, 1944 and was raised in York, Pennsylvania. In her youth, she was a dancer, a cheerleader, a girl scout, and an equestrian. She graduated from York Catholic High School in 1962 and Bryn Mawr College in 1965. She started a long career in nursing that spanned several states. She had many passions in her life, most notably her family, nursing, the catholic church, music, and animals. She was an owner, breeder, and assistant trainer at Charles Town Racetrack for many years, and volunteered her time with the Horsemen's Benevolent and Protective Association. She also worked for Hospice of the Panhandle and Blue Ridge Hospice for many years, developing a deep passion for end of life care.
Mary is survived by her husband, James M. Smoot, her children John K Cahalin and his wife Helen Jo of Chicago, IL, Kevin P Cahalin of Chicago, IL, Jaime E Kirby and her husband John Douglas of Charles Town, WV, Rosa D Brown of Charles Town, WV, Sylvia V Boggs of Martinsburg, WV, and many beautiful grandchildren and great grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her daughter Kimberly Eileen, her mother Minnie C Heibeck, her father Kenneth G O'Toole, and her sister Florence Ann Van Leuven.
Visitation will take place at Eackles-Spencer & Norton Funeral Home, 256 Halltown Road, Harpers Ferry, WV on Sunday, October 26th from 6-8pm, with a Rosary and vigil to be held at 7:30 pm.
Her life will be celebrated with a Mass of Christian Burial on Monday, October 27th at 10 A.M. at St. James the Greater Catholic Church, 49 Crosswinds Drive, Charles Town, WV. Interment will follow in St. Peters Cemetery in Harpers Ferry.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. James Catholic Church or TB Aftercare Charles Town (tbaftercare.org).
