Obituary

Nellie Virginia (Morrison) Longerbeam, 98, of Millville, WV passed away on May 22, 2023 at her home with her loving family by her side and the wonderful support of Hospice of the Panhandle.  She was known by those around her as "Gram".

Gram was born on April 18, 1925 in Cedarville, VA to the late Charles and Grace Morrison.  She was one of nine children all of whom preceded her in death.  She is survived by one sister in-law, Wanda Morrison.

Gram met her late husband, Linwood Longerbeam, in 1946 at the Old Orchard Inn.  From that point until his passing in 2004 they were inseparable.  They built a beautiful home together in Millville and hosted many parties and reunions (Morrison Family Reunion, Whittington Family Reunion, and the Millville School Reunion just to name a few). They wanted their home to be a place of gathering for family and friends where everyone would feel welcomed.  Gram also enjoyed bowling on the Shenandoah Lanes Senior League, traveling with her husband and family; and attending antique car shows in their 1937 Chevy Coupe.

Gram's primary career was taking care of her family which included raising her 3 daughters Dorcas Barron (Roger "Chic" Forsythe), Sue Hicks (Terry Stewart), and Bonnie Webb (Timothy Webb) and being the ever present, world's best back rubber, best after school snack maker, and first-class advice giver to her grandchildren Chad Bryan (Diane Jeffries), Kim Sanders (Tony Sanders), Jason Hahn (Renee Bremer), and Robert Walker (Elena Linkous).  She was also blessed with  great grandchildren Chelsea Zbikowski, Chad Bryan II, Dori Sanders, Stone Sanders, Courtland Hahn, Abigail Hahn and 2 great great grandchildren Ella and Phoenix.  Gram had many nieces and nephews who were dear to her and one special niece whom spent lots of time with her, Faye Campbell.  Along with her focus on family, Gram also worked seasonally at H. F. Byrd's Orchard as a supervisor.

At the age of 98, Gram and her family would often be asked what were her secrets to a long life.  She was an avid reader of romance novels (heavy on the romance) and had the privilege of meeting Nora Roberts on her 90th birthday.  Gram took a nap every afternoon in order to be rested and stay sharp.  She was also constantly working on jigsaw puzzles.  And last and most importantly, she had a positive attitude and spirit.  She could often be heard saying "it's what you make it".   Gram was not a complainer, but would rather do her best through hard work, kindness, and love to make the situation better.  Her family saw this in action until the time of her death.  Our world needs more Grams.

Services will be held at 11:00 am on Wednesday, May 31, 2023 at Eackles-Spencer & Norton Funeral Home, 256 Halltown Road, Harpers Ferry, WV. Interment will follow at Edge Hill Cemetery in Charles Town, WV.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Tuesday from 6-8 pm.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of the Panhandle, 300 Hospice Way, Kearneysville, WV 25430
