Patrick McClellan Welsh, 61, of Hedgesville, passed away on July 12, 2026 at Berkeley Medical Center.
Born March 14, 1965, he was the son of the late Harold ‘Skip” M. Welsh and Lois “Dubbie” Stickley Welsh. One of the “Bakerton Boys”, Pat was raised in Bakerton, where he spent much of his youth on the Potomac River. He was of the Methodist faith and was raised in the Bakerton Methodist Church.
He graduated from Jefferson High School, Class of 1983, where many remember him as the Cougars’ “ Lucky #7”. A standout on the football field, Pat played quarterback, wide receiver and running back. He was also a track team member and participated in the band. He later attended Shepherd University and was a member of the Theta Xi Fraternity.
Pat began his career at PMR Printing before founding P.M. Welsh Company in 1988. For more than 30 years, he owned and operated an excavating, hauling, paving and sealing business. Through this work, Pat earned his reputation as an outstanding skilled heavy equipment operator. Although he enjoyed sales and entrepreneurship, he eventually returned to what he loved most, driving trucks. At the time of his passing, he was employed by TBH Concrete Suppliers as a concrete truck driver.
Known for his infectious personality, Pat never met a stranger. He had an inspirational ability to make friends wherever he went and was happiest surrounded by people. For many years, he served as coach of the Raiders JCYFL football team. As Coach Pat, he mentored countless young athletes and left a lasting impact on many lives.
Pat was a patriot, an avid WVU and Washington Redskins fan, and a “self-styled ping-pong champion of the world”. He had fond memories of riding his beloved horse, Annie, with his daughter and playing “Bucket-Head” with his son. He treasured his two dogs, Jack and Gus.
He is survived by his wife, Wendy Welsh, his beloved grandchildren to whom he was “Poppy”, Madison Ann and Nora Grace Lamp, his daughter, Kaila A. Lamp and husband, Matt of Harpers Ferry, son, Kallan P. Welsh of Illinois, one sister, Traci Welsh-Taylor of Charles Town, one niece he thought of as his own daughter, Suzanne N. Kave and husband, Richie of Ranson, special friend of the family, Donnie Weller of Shepherdstown and numerous uncles, aunts and cousins.
He is also survived by step-children, Tara and Brad Turner (Karsyn, Camden), Daniel Nalley, Benjamin and Shannon Earle (Zeke and Naomi), Jessica and Danny McCollum (Hazel), brothers and sisters-in-law, Kenny and Laura Miller, Brenda and Cliff Bishop, Daniel Miller and Daniel Herlihy.
