Obituary

Pat of Shepherdstown, WV, passed away on August 14, 2026.

She was born on July 28, 1938 and grew up in Bakerton, WV and Harpers ferry, WV with her parents, Willard and Virginia Moler.

She graduated as Valedictorian from Harpers Ferry High School in 1956. Sher majored in biology and chemistry at Shepherd College, Receiving a BS degree in 1960. While there, she met Jack Egle, whom she married on August 26, 1961.

Pat had a career as a laboratory research specialist, first at NIH Cancer Institute in Bethesda, MD, then three years in Microbiology at WVU, followed by 20 years in the Department of Biochemistry at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond. She co-authored several research papers while at VCU dealing with the induction of proteins in the cells of the brain and kidneys by lead.

During her 50 years in Richmond, Pat, in addition to being a loving mother, was a member of the Episcopal Church of the Redeemer. She served on the vestry, sang in the choir, was a member of the altar guild for many years and was involved with other ministries, including teaching Sunday school. She especially enjoyed singing with Jubilation, an outreach choir sponsored by a Presbyterian Church near Redeemer.

Pat enjoyed playing tennis as a member of the Southampton Recreation Association team and playing doubles with Jack. She was an avid gardener and reader. Pat enjoyed traveling immensely. Through a combination of vacation trips and accompanying Jack to scientific meetings, she spent time in nearly all 50 states and most Canadian Provinces. She and Jack also visited most European countries plus Russia, Australia and New Zealand. In 1993, Pat and Jack bought a condo at Deep Creek Lake in MD. They have enjoyed spending time there at all seasons of the year, especially cruising in their pontoon boat. In 2015, Pat and Jack moved back to Jefferson County, living in Shepherdstown, WV. She joined Trinity Episcopal Church and began serving on the altar guild.

The Egles became very involved in supporting Shepherd University’s academic and athletic programs through the Foundation, establishing two scholarships and being members the McMurran and Scarborough Societies, The President’s Club, The Athletic Club and WISH (Women Investing in Shepherd). She served several terms on the Shepherd Foundation’s Board of Directors. Pat was also on the Board of Directors of the Shepherdstown Day Care Center for a number of years.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her sister, Kathy Clouser.

She is survived by her beloved husband of 65 years; two wonderful daughters, Lynn French (Kirk) of Richmond, VA and Carol Conners (Darren) of Boyce, VA; grandsons, Tommy Waddell, Bill Waddell; and several cousins.

A memorial service will be held on September 12, 2026, at 11:00 A.M., at Trinity Episcopal Church, 200 W. German Street, Shepherdstown, WV, with Reverend Gethin Wied officiating.
