Obituary

Perry Michael Ballenger, known by family and friends as Mick or Mickey, passed away on Friday, May 6, 2022 at home in Charles Town, after an extended illness, at the age of 71.

He was born October 27, 1950 and was the son of the late Norman and Annabelle Ballenger.

Mick retired as Captain of the Ranson Police Department after 37 1/2 years of service, receiving the Police Chief's Association Medal of Honor.  He often talked of his first job with John Brown Distillery in Harpers Ferry.

He was an active charter member of the Catoctin Mt. Street Rods, where he and his wife, Bonnie, enjoyed participating in car shows and cruise-ins in their 56 Ford Fairlane. He was a member of the Loyal Order of Moose Lodge #948 and a member of the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge #83.

Mick love WWE Wrestling, NASCAR and the Redskins. He enjoyed traveling in their motor home and spending time at the campgrounds with family and friends.

He is survived by his wife and best friend, Bonnie, whom he married on October 8, 2004 in Gatlinburg, TN, after a friendship which spanned over 35 years. He is also survived by his stepdaughters, Stefanie Longerbeam and husband, James and Suzanna Brady and husband, Adam; eight grandchildren, Michael Spangler and Kaitlyn, Kayla Bradford, Christian, Jackson and Skylar Longerbeam and Haley, Landon and Paige Brady; two great grandchildren, Gunnar and Autumn Bradford;  niece, Brianna Claxton and family from Spotsylvania, VA and daughter, Michelle.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his step-daughter, Sheila Spangler; brothers, Wayne Earl Ballenger, Greg Ballenger and Lester Longerbeam (Tom Dick).

Mick will be truly missed by his two beloved beagles, Sophie and Baxter, who were by his side.

Special thanks to family and friends who helped during his extended illness.

A celebration of life will be held on Monday, May 16, 2022 at 11:00 am at the Ranson Civic Center with Dr. Henry Christie officiating.
