Obituary

Virginia "Ginny" Lee Shewbridge Smith of Charles Town, WV, passed away at her home on Saturday, April 29, 2023.  Born August 14, 1927 in Harpers Ferry, WV, the daughter of Marie (Kain) Shewbridge and Howard Lee Shewbridge, Sr.

Ginny graduated from Harpers Ferry High School where she was a cheerleader and a member of the girls basketball team.  She was a member of the St. James Catholic Church and of the Charles Town Junior Womens Club.  She was employed with The Hecht Company in Washington, DC, the Jefferson Publishing Company, and Hann Electric Company.

Ginny is survived by her daughter, Sharon S. Mayer and husband Steven of Potomac, MD and son Christopher D. Smith of Charles Town, WV, and her grandchildren Nathan, Michael and Olivia Smith, Nicholas Mayer, Suzanne Vyvoda and Karen Fisher. She is also survived by her brother-in-law Carroll Todd Smith and sisters-in-law Mildred, Judy, and Betsy Smith and Virginia Shewbridge; along with three great grandchildren and many beloved nieces and nephews.  Preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, Donald S. Smith and infant daughter Melissa Marie Smith.  Also preceded in death by her brothers Dr. Anthol Shewbridge and Howard Shewbridge, Jr., and four brothers-in-law John, Bill, Archie and Barry Smith.

A Mass will be held at 10:00 a.m., on Thursday, May 11, 2023 at St. James Catholic Church, 49 Crosswinds Drive, Charles Town, WV.  The Rosary will be held prior to mass at 9:30 a.m. Interment will follow the service at Edge Hill Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her honor to: Meals on Wheels of Jefferson County, P.O. Box 565 Charles Town, WV. 25414 or St. James Catholic Church (for the preservation of St. Peters Church).
