Berry, Jr.
August 20, 1937 – October 20, 2018
William "Bill" Francis Berry, Jr., 81, of Charles Town, WV passed away on Saturday, October 20, 2018 at Winchester Medical Center.
Born August 20, 1937 in Clearfield, PA, he was the son of the late William Berry Sr. and Catherine Lynch Berry.
Bill was a member of the Roman Catholic Parish of St. James the Greater in Charles Town, WV, where he was a member of the Knights of Columbus. He served as a Lector, and consulted with families on the design of stain glass windows. He taught preschoolers Bible stories using the stories told by the stained glass windows.
Bill was a graduate of Lycoming College in Williamsport, PA.
He retired from the Bureau of Labor and Statistics working on Consumer Price Index and Producer Price Index. He made several trips to Europe advising foreign governments on price index construction. Bill worked in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia from 1982-1984, where he was recruited by the Census Bureau to develop a wholesale price index for Central Department of Statistic in Riyadh.
Bill played a significant role in the restoration project to restore St. Peters Historic Chapel in Harpers Ferry. He helped to organize St. Peters Docent Ministry. He was a member of the Charles Town Civil War Roundtable where he spoke as an authority on Civil War Railroads.
Bill was part of a group trying to secure a permanent solution for the homeless in the county. He worked as a liaison for the Jefferson Homeless Coalition and Jefferson County Community Ministries and he was also a member of the Eastern Regional
Advisory Council of Catholic Charities in WV.
He is survived by his loving wife of 33 years, Catherine "Kate" Amos Berry, at home; two sisters, Ann Eck and husband, Edward and Sara Jean Hallas and husband, David; one brother, Thomas Patrick Berry; one niece, Cathy Stover, eight nephews, Herman, Edward, Kenneth, Stephen, William and Kevin Eck and Joseph and David Hallas and several great nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one brother, James Michael Berry.
A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10:00 am on Friday, October 26, 2018 at St James Catholic Church, 49 Crosswinds Drive, Charles Town, WV with Father Carlos Melocoton as the Celebrant, Fr. George Pucciarelli as Concelebrant, assisted by Deacon Dave Galvin.
The family will receive friends at the Eackles-Spencer & Norton Funeral Home, 256 Halltown Road, Harpers Ferry, WV on Thursday from 2-4 and 7-9 pm with a vigil to be held at 8:30pm.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St James Catholic Church Social Concerns Committee, 49 Crosswinds Drive, Charles Town, WV 25414 or Jefferson County Community Ministries, 238 West Washington Street, Charles Town, WV 25414.
