Mr. William R. Care, age 85 and 10 months of Martinsburg, WV, passed to his heavenly home on July 15th at 1:44 pm, at his home.
He was predeceased by his beloved wife Alice Elaine ( Crummitt ) Care, of 50 years. He was born on September 15th, 1940 in Brunswick, MD. He was the son of the late William G. and Edna R. ( Kline ) Care of Brunswick , MD.
Richard is survived by his son Roger E. Care of Martinsburg, WV and his son Richard S. Care. Also surviving are his brothers: Charles E. Care ( Tammy ) of Knoxville, MD and Donald W. Care ( Betsy ) of Oakland , MD and his sister Debra L. Care of Boonsboro, MD. He is also survived by his grandson Jacob D. Ryland and granddaughter Paige E. DeVore ( Zachery ) of Hope Mills, NC and great granddaughter Zoey and great grandson Brantley. He is survived by a cousin George Whitney ( Phyllis ) of Vienna, VA and many nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews, that all loved him very much.
He will be remembered by very good neighbors Doug and Melva Murphy, Chris Murphy ( Laura ) Jennefer Murphy and her daughter Nyla of Winchester, VA, also Jim and Mim Taylor of Sterling, VA, Alice Waning of Ashburn, VA and Bob Gross ( Leanne ) of Winchester, VA.
Richard grew up and graduated from Brunswick High School in 1958, married his wife Elaine in Brunswick on September 5 1964 and lived there until he moved to Sterling VA in 1969 after his wife’s passing in 2014. He then moved to Winchester VA in April 2018. In 2023, he moved into his son’s home in Martinsburg, WV where his son, Roger and Tracy took care of him until his unfortunate passing form cancer.
He was a cadet and adult member of the Brunswick Civil Air Patrol for several years. He was one of the youngest pilots in Frederick County, receiving his student pilot license at the age of 16 and his private license at 17 and flew out of Brunswick airfield for several years. He was a Boy Scout for 31 years and the holder of wood badge beads ( Beaver patrol ).
Richard and his wife Elaine were founding members of a group that became, the present Park Heights Cemetery, Inc.
As a youngster, Richard worked at his father’s business Vets Cab and Cares Service Station in Brunswick for several years. He then worked at Price Electric and Frederick, MD. Following electronic school in Hagerstown, MD, he worked at American Tel and Tel for 27 years. After retirement, he drove a school bus in Loudoun County, VA for 16 years and retired for good in 2026.
He was a charter member of the Heritage Baptist Church in Sterling ,VA .
Over the years he enjoyed flying, camping, hunting, fishing, goat carts, traveling, reading, bluegrass, old country and 50's rock and roll music. He and Elaine enjoyed duckpin bowling in Brunswick and 10 pins in Sterling, VA. He and his wife enjoyed their 15 years at Myrtle Beach, SC and they made several long driving trips around the country.
Richard served his country in the West Virginia Air National Guard for six years. He was a member of the Moose Lodge in Winchester, VA, the Eagles Club in Brunswick and was one of the original members of the Brunswick Volunteer Ambulance Company. He was an active volunteer in Park Heights Cemetery until his passing.
Services will be held at 11:00 am on Friday, July 24, 2026 at Eackles-Spencer & Norton Funeral Home, 256 Halltown Road, Harpers Ferry, WV with Pastor Bill Ball officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Interment will follow in Park Heights Cemetery in Brunswick, MD.
