William Joseph
Hennessy, Jr.
September 1, 1936 – February 4, 2022
LCDR William Hennessy died February 4, 2022 after a long illness. He was born September 1, 1936 in Philadelphia PA to Margaret Mary Kirby and William Hennessy Sr. He graduated from St. Fidelis Seminary High School in Herman, Pa, received his BA from St. Joseph's University in Philadelphia and his Masters in Public Administration from Golden Gate University.
With great love for his country, he served in the United States Navy from June 1961 until October 1981. His first duty station was with VW 11 in Argentia, Newfoundland. He also served as liaison officer from Naval Air Systems Command in DC to Grumman Aerospace in Bethpage NY for the building of the E-2C Hawkeye Early Warning Aircraft. As a Naval Flight Officer, he deployed on USS Saratoga with VAW-123 when the E-2C was first deployed to the Mediterranean. On retirement, he worked for many years as a consultant for Logicon, Inc and for Northrop Grumman.
He is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Sheila Overbaugh Hennessy, seven children and eleven grandchildren: Sean (Deb Valenti) Mina &Hugo; Kathleen (Chris Garlock) Christopher, Stephen & Kierstin; Lisa (Jay Small) 2 nd Lt Rob Dau and his wife 1 st Lt Georgia Sims Dau; Therese: Brandon Ajay; Nora (Dr. Kenneth Osowski) Aaron Michael (prematurely deceased); Kristen (Matthew Pixler) Logan and Peyton; David (Anna Matijasic) NoraLuca.
Also siblings: Margaret Mary Hennessy (Tony Alzamora-deceased), Jack Hennessy (deceased) Marge McCauley; Jim Hennessy (Chris Tumasz) and Eileen Hennessy (Paul Janke) and a great many extended family members.
He loved his God, his family, and his St. Agnes community where he was, for some years, a member of the choir. He loved sailing his "Dawn Treader" with his children in the waters of the Tidewater area and loved wood working, with children, grandchildren and others as happy recipients of his handiwork.
A funeral Mass of the Resurrection will be held at St. Agnes Catholic Church, 106 S. Duke Street, Shepherdstown, WV at 11 o'clock on February 18 th with visitation for an hour prior to the service. Interment will follow in St. Peter's Cemetery in Harpers Ferry, WV.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St Agnes Church, P.O. Box 1603, Shepherdstown, WV 25443.
