Obituary

Charles L. Newman, 76, of Charles Town, WV was born on November 7, 1941 to the late Joseph and Bessie Newman and left us on Tuesday, May 15, 2018 surrounded by his family. His life seemed too short to those who were touched by him. He brought so much joy to his family.

Charles is survived by his wife Betty of 58 years, daughters Donna M. Newman of Charles Town WV, Denise Carter (Keith) of Martinsburg WV, Dena Whiten (Darryl) of Frederick, MD, and Delana Newman of Martinsburg, WV. His grandchildren Whitney Whiten, Te'rel Roman (Rochelle), Peyton Carter, and Colby Jackson. Great granddaughter Cali Marie Jackson.

Surviving siblings are his brother Richard Newman and sister Lolita Robinson, both of Charles Town WV. He leaves many loving nieces, nephews, extended family, and many friends. Charles loved taking road trips and spending time with his wife Betty. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and friend to all who crossed his path. He was of Baptist Faith and loved the Lord.

He was preceded in death by his brothers George Newman, Louis Newman and James Newman. Sisters Bertha Taylor, Laura Russ, Elizabeth Jackson, Dorothy Clark, Josephine Thomas and Foster child Wade Vernard McDonald.

Charles served in the United States Army before he was honorably discharged in 1962. He worked at Dixie Narco as a Heliarc Welder and Supervisor. From there he worked at Job Corp as a Dormitory Manager and Assistant Corps Member Supervisor in the Residential Living Program. He was then promoted to the Recreational Director and worked there for 28 years.

Charles loved his job at the Job Corp until a devastating stroke forced him to retire. After his rehabilitation, he and a close friend/co-worker Maurice Braxton began a Lawn Care landscaping business, which was eventually named Newman's Lawn Care. He loved being able to work outside and ride on his John Deer tractor. Charles enjoyed sitting on his front porch, fishing with his buddies, hunting, going to the beach with his family and vacation crew, and going to the local sports games. His favorite professional teams were the Baltimore Orioles and Miami Dolphins. He also coached little league teams in his younger years and volunteered on numerous community service projects.

He also enjoyed cooking his special pancakes and fried oysters…these were requested frequently! He loved to read the newspaper and Readers Digest every day. Charles was always there to help family and friends with whatever else they needed. No questions asked.

Charles was a 1959 graduate of Page Jackson High School.

In 1968, Charles became an active member of Prince Hall Masonry. He served on many committees throughout the years. Charles was currently Chairman of the Investigating Committee for Star Lodge #1. He also held positions as Commander of Post #102, President of the Zenith Club, and Past Master of Star Lodge #1.
